About
Springfield Elementary Physical Education
Mission Statement: The physical education program at Springfield Elementary School is based upon the achievement of knowledge and skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity. The mission of Physical Education is to allow all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life. While doing so, students will experience a variety of activities through fitness development, guided and independent practices, and various lead-up activities. Physical Education is a sequential educational program. It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and nonthreatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged to be successful. Students with disabilities are provided with a learning environment that is modified, when necessary, to allow for maximum participation. I am committed to providing a safe and positive learning environment in which all students achieve personal bests and success. The goal of the program is to guide young lives towards healthy and active futures. The kindergarten through sixth grade physical education curriculum is designed to equip students with a comprehensive body of knowledge and a variety of meaningful physical education experiences that we believe are essential to the educational process of every child. In addition, we believe that a well-planned and purposeful physical education program can impact the successful attainment our students’ personal goals for a lifetime. By participating in a program that consists of defined direction and clearly specified objectives, students are more likely to learn, develop competencies and confidence, and be prepared for a physically active life. The elementary physical education curriculum will emphasize selected fundamental motor skills that facilitate development of efficient movement patterns, accommodate neural development, and equip students with basic physical skills common to a variety of lifelong activities. The physical education curriculum assists students with establishing health-related activity patterns and associate fitness capacities. It provides instruction on cognitive concepts related to assigning value to engaging in regular physical activity and safe, effective participation. Finally, the elementary physical education program addresses developmentally appropriate personal-social skills that promote behaviors in this physically active setting that are essential to successful participation, personal satisfaction, and contribute positively to the well-being of the individual, family, and community. At Springfield Elementary, the goal of our Physical Education Program is to enhance the learning process by making the classes enjoyable as well as educational. The most important objective is for the student to understand how important physical activity (exercise) and nutrition are to maintaining an active lifestyle throughout their life. Teamwork, social skills, and sportsmanship are also heavily focused upon during each activity. |
